Mission Ghar Vapsi: Bringing Homes to the Underserved

By raising $1500 and securing essential documents, Niles and their team registered 70 families, providing them with safe, functional homes, including kitchens, subsidized utilities, showers, toilets, and beds.

Homelessness is a painful reality that millions face worldwide. In India, the plight of homeless individuals is often compounded by the lack of proper documentation, which further prevents them from accessing government benefits that could help them regain stability. As I began my work with Annapurna, an organization I founded to feed and support underserved communities, I witnessed firsthand the struggles of homeless individuals. This experience sparked a passion in me to help them go beyond temporary relief and access the fundamental right to a home.

The Birth of Mission Ghar Vapsi

The turning point came when I learned about a policy introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, offering free housing to homeless individuals under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This scheme was a game-changer for those without a permanent roof over their heads, but there was one major hurdle: many of these individuals lacked the necessary identification documents to register for the policy. Without Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, bank accounts, or ration cards, accessing the benefits of the PMAY scheme was impossible.

This led to the creation of Mission Ghar Vapsi, which translates to “Returning to Home.” The mission was simple: to help homeless individuals, especially those in the cities of Bardoli and Surat, obtain the required documentation to be eligible for the housing policy, and ultimately, to secure a home for them.

Calculating the Budget: Small Contributions for Big Change

In the initial stages of the mission, I calculated that a mere $0.40 per person would be enough to cover the cost of acquiring the necessary documents—bank accounts, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, and ration cards. This was the foundation upon which the entire mission was built. With this modest sum, we could help an individual register for the free housing scheme and unlock a chance for a better life.

To fund this initiative, I turned to the community. I explained the mission to friends, family, and supporters, and within no time, we raised over $1500. This amount would go a long way in helping undocumented individuals secure their rightful place in society. With the funds in place, my friends and I set out on the ground to reach out to homeless people and guide them through the process of acquiring these essential documents.

Reaching Out: Connecting with the Homeless

The real work began once we started reaching out to the homeless in the cities of Bardoli and Surat. It wasn’t just about giving them the documents—they had to be convinced that a better future was possible, that they were not invisible, and that they too deserved a place to call home.

Along with five dedicated friends, we began our work by researching over 70 families within the first three months of the project. We identified the most vulnerable individuals and families and worked with them to gather the required paperwork. Some people were hesitant at first, unsure if they could trust us or the government’s offer. Many had never had the chance to access such opportunities before. But through persistent engagement and building trust, we were able to convince them that this was their time to return to a place they could call home.

A Year of Change: From Homelessness to a New Home

The impact of our efforts was truly transformative. Within just one year, the families we assisted had registered for the free housing scheme. The process was not always smooth, but seeing these families’ lives change for the better made every challenge worthwhile. The housing provided through the PMAY scheme wasn’t just a roof over their heads—it was a complete transformation. The homes were equipped with functioning kitchens, subsidized gas and electricity, proper showers, toilets, and one bed per family member, ensuring that everyone had a safe and comfortable living space.

For many, this was the first time they had experienced such dignity. It wasn’t just a house—it was a home, a place where they could finally rest, eat, and live without fear. This was a pivotal moment for both the families and me, knowing that this project had helped bring lasting change to their lives.

Expanding the Impact: A Vision for the Future

The success of Mission Ghar Vapsi is not just measured in the number of people we’ve helped, but in the ripple effect it has created in the community. The initiative has sparked a broader conversation about homelessness, the importance of documentation, and the need for community support in addressing social inequalities.

Looking ahead, we plan to expand the mission to reach even more families, particularly in rural areas and other underserved regions across Gujarat. We are also working on creating awareness about the significance of securing documentation and how it can unlock opportunities for other government schemes and services that can further improve the lives of these individuals.

Additionally, we aim to collaborate with local government bodies, NGOs, and volunteers to make the process of document registration even more accessible. The journey doesn’t end with housing—it’s about empowering individuals to regain their place in society with the tools they need to thrive.
