Inspired by a poignant moment one Diwali, when I saw a mother collecting oil from temple lamps to feed her family, I realized the profound difference between "life" and "living." This encounter sparked Annapurna, an initiative founded with friends to fight hunger and uplift communities in Gujarat. What began with feeding 150 people in Bardoli quickly grew, thanks to the support of local communities and volunteers. Today, Annapurna employs over 120 people, serves countless families, and has earned national recognition for community service and youth empowerment. Join me on a journey of compassion, resilience, and the transformative power of unity as Annapurna continues to expand, bringing hope and sustenance to those who need it most.

A Diwali Revelation
As a child, I’d always looked forward to Diwali—the glimmering lights, bustling markets, and the thrill of buying divas and firecrackers. But one Diwali, an experience would change my perspective forever. I was out shopping with my family when I noticed a woman, barely clothed, breastfeeding her child. She was invisible to the crowd, yet her needs spoke louder than words. Later that night, in an ancestral temple where hundreds of lamps illuminated the surroundings, I saw her again, carefully collecting oil from the lamps. In that moment, the glaring divide between our lives—and the fundamental dignity every person deserves—struck me deeply.
Planting the Seeds of Annapurna
Watching her struggle, I realized that beyond the bright lights and joy of Diwali, there exists another world—one shadowed by poverty and need. I started asking myself: Why do we celebrate festivals with abundance, while others can’t meet basic needs? This question became the foundation for Annapurna, a project born of a simple yet powerful mission: to serve those less fortunate and provide them with a basic necessity—food.

At first, Annapurna was just an idea shared with my friends and family. But I felt a spark, a sense of purpose that wouldn’t let me rest. I spoke to my father and his friends, and together, we decided to turn this vision into a reality. In our Gujarati culture, we’ve always been taught the principles of service, generosity, and earning punya—spiritual merit—by helping others. Inspired by these teachings, I gathered my friends and our community to give Annapurna a tangible start.
Building Community Support: From Words to Action
In our first two weeks, we reached out to neighbors, attended local gatherings, and spread the word during Diwali celebrations. To our surprise, the support was overwhelming. Families came forward to sponsor meals, neighbors donated funds, and, within days, we had raised $8,700. In India, where feeding a hundred people costs as little as $50-90, this amount felt like a blessing. We were determined to use it effectively, and our small team sprang into action.

We hired a local cook who, while charging only for the ingredients, volunteered his time. This community-driven approach allowed us to hire additional workers and ensured that our funds stretched far. In our first week, we served meals to 150 people, and the response was profoundly moving. Seeing mothers hold their children close, wiping tears of gratitude, and hearing blessings like "Bhagwan taru bhalu kare"—may God bring you success and happiness—left a mark on me that will never fade.
Expanding Our Reach: A Growing Initiative
Initially, we operated on a modest scale, serving meals every other day in Bardoli. As word spread, more volunteers joined, and donations from various communities began pouring in. Within months, our team grew from five friends and seven workers to over 500 volunteers and 120 employed workers, allowing us to cover larger areas across Gujarat.
Our project gained the attention of local panchayats and city officials who saw Annapurna as a way to inspire and mobilize youth in surrounding towns. They provided logistical support, connecting us with young people in neighboring areas who could replicate our model. As new towns adopted the Annapurna approach, our initiative evolved from a small community effort into a movement. We established a structured process, mapped out areas most in need, and employed more cooks and helpers to ensure we could provide high-quality meals consistently.
The Impact of Annapurna: Empowerment Through Employment
As we scaled, Annapurna began to touch lives in more ways than one. Not only were we feeding hundreds of people, but we were also creating jobs, empowering individuals to become self-sufficient. For many of our workers, Annapurna provided a rare opportunity for stable income and personal growth. They were no longer just employees; they became ambassadors of our mission, carrying the values of community and service forward.

In Gujarat, our initiative now operates across multiple cities, including Surat, Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Saurashtra, and Bardoli, supporting over 1,000 people and families. As I saw the lives we were touching, I realized that the essence of happiness isn’t just in having, but in giving. Annapurna became a source of pride, a means of fostering unity, and a beacon of hope for communities that had long been overlooked.
Recognition and Reflection: A Journey of Growth
One year after Annapurna’s inception, just days before Diwali, our efforts were recognized nationally. Our team received an award for community service and youth entrepreneurship, a testament to the work we had accomplished together. This recognition wasn’t just a personal achievement—it symbolized the power of collective action and the profound change we can bring when driven by compassion and purpose.

Reflecting on this journey, I am reminded of the blessing given to me by the woman collecting oil from the temple lamps. Her struggle had sparked an idea, but the community’s support transformed it into a movement. I’ve come to understand that the journey of uplifting others is both humbling and enlightening, revealing the strength we all carry to make meaningful change.
The Future of Annapurna: Sustaining and Growing
Today, Annapurna continues to grow. Our vision is not only to expand the regions we serve but also to create sustainable models that communities can implement independently. We are exploring partnerships with local organizations to introduce skills training, aiming to uplift individuals further by providing job opportunities and educational resources. By focusing on sustainability, we hope to create a ripple effect that transcends Annapurna and empowers people to achieve self-sufficiency.
Through Annapurna, I’ve come to understand that service is more than an act—it’s a commitment to see, understand, and act on the needs of others. This journey has shown me the true meaning of community, resilience, and the joy that lies in giving. I am honored to be part of something that brings not only food to those in need but also hope, dignity, and a sense of belonging.
Lighting Lamps of Hope
As I look back, I see that Diwali isn’t just about lighting lamps in our homes. It’s about illuminating lives, kindling hope, and nurturing a spirit of compassion that transcends boundaries. Annapurna is my way of carrying this light forward, of honoring the blessings we receive by sharing them with those who need it most. Through this initiative, I am reminded daily that true happiness is not in accumulation but in sharing, not in celebrating in isolation but in uplifting together.
May Annapurna continue to grow, one meal, one community, one step at a time, lighting lamps of hope wherever they are needed.
